How to measure chatbot-assisted conversions
How to attribute a conversion to chatbot assistance using connected events, consistent windows, comparisons, and distinct evidence levels.
An assisted conversion means the chatbot participated in the journey before a purchase. It does not necessarily mean the chatbot caused the purchase. Useful measurement needs an explicit definition, connected events, and levels of evidence that separate exposure, interaction, and plausible influence.
Define assistance
The broadest definition counts any purchase after chat was opened. This is simple, but includes accidental interactions and shoppers who would have purchased anyway. A more informative definition requires a meaningful action: asking a question, opening a recommended product, or selecting an item surfaced during the conversation.
Document the rule before analysis. Changing it after seeing the result makes the comparison less reliable.
How Valen fits
Reconstructing assistance requires consistent identifiers within the session and a time-ordered sequence. Record chat opened, question asked, products shown, products opened, cart addition, and purchase. Preserve browsing events that happen without chat as well.
Valen records visitor sessions and events, as demonstrated on a demo store. Valen lets shoppers search the catalog and ask product questions during the conversation, as demonstrated on a demo store.
Valen offers recommendations while keeping the catalog browsable and lets shoppers move from product quick view to chat without losing the product, as demonstrated on a demo store. Compared with an isolated chatbot, these transitions make the relationship between conversation and browsing observable.
Separate contact from contribution
Evidence can be organized into levels. Exposure means chat was available. Interaction means the shopper used it. Observable contribution requires a connection between conversation and action, such as opening a recommended product. Causality requires an experiment or an equivalent design.
Choose a consistent window
The distance between conversation and purchase depends on the product. Use a window aligned with the decision cycle and apply it consistently to the groups being compared. A broad window gives chat credit for distant journeys, while a narrow one misses decisions that take time.
Handle cross-device sessions and later returns with care. If they cannot be connected with appropriate consent and identification, state the limitation rather than estimating an uncertain match.
Avoid double counting
A conversion may receive credit from campaigns, search, email, and chat. Decide whether the chatbot receives descriptive credit or participates in a shared attribution model. Do not add assisted conversions from different channels as if they were distinct purchases.
Compare the attributed figure with people who did not interact, while accounting for differences in intent. Someone opening chat may already be closer to purchasing.
What to report
Report conversions after exposure, after interaction, and after action on a suggested product separately. Include the definition, window, exclusions, and technical limitations. This keeps the figure interpretable rather than turning it into a marketing promise.
